Hurricane Ernesto is expected to make landfall on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula tonight. A Hurricane Warning continues from Chetumal to Tulum on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, including Cozumel, as well as the entire coast of Belize.
Preparations to protect life and property there must be rushed to completion.
The hurricane is centered this evening over the northwest Caribbean Sea about 140 miles east of Chetumal, Mexico. It’s forecast to cross the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula tonight, then move across it overnight and early Wednesday, and emerge over the Bay of Campeche by Wednesday afternoon or evening.
Maximum sustained winds are 80 mph, a Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is possible before Ernesto reaches the Yucatan Peninsula, with weakening as it moves inland.
