Tropical Storm ‘Sandy’ formed this afternoon, centered over the southwest Caribbean Sea about 395 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica.
Sandy is stalled right now, but a motion toward the north and north-northeast is expected during the next couple of days. The forecast track brings the center near or over Jamaica on Wednesday.
Maximum sustained winds are 40 mph. Additional strengthening is forecast, and Sandy may be near hurricane strength when it approaches Jamaica.
Total rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches are expected across Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, with isolated amounts of 16 inches possible, especially in mountainous terrain areas, triggering life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.
