The April 27 photo-op caused quite a fright in Lower Manhattan and New Jersey, as many people who had lived through the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks thought the city was again under siege. Workers poured out of office buildings as the planes buzzed the city near the Financial District.
Local officials in New York and New Jersey had not been informed of the photo-op, which cost some $328,000, and the lack of communication and needless worry caused by the incident led to the resignation of Louis Caldera, the Obama official behind the stunt.
Responding to dozens of requests from the public, the Defense Department has released 146 more photos from the infamous Air Force One flyover that struck fear in thousands of unsuspecting New Yorkers in April.
The photos are posted right on the Pentagon’s Website, defense officials said today. The Pentagon also released a heavily redacted flight manifest.
Earlier today, the moon passed directly in front of the sun, causing a total solar eclipse that crossed nearly half the Earth – through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China.
Today’s was the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century, lasting as much as 6 minutes and 39 seconds in a few areas. Despite cloudy skies in many of the populated areas in the path, millions of people gathered outside to gaze up and view this rare event. Collected here are a few images of the eclipse, and those people who came out to watch. (33 photos total)
“America the Beautiful” is certainly an appropriate description. From the thundering power of the Niagara Falls, the panoramic splendor of the Grand Canyon, and the towering proportions of Mount McKinley…But what about all the places in-between?

If a deer with no eyes is a ‘no-eye-deer’ – what do you call one with six legs?
Such a creature has been discovered after being attacked by two dogs in Everett Springs, Georgia.
The fawn has two distinct pelvises and uses one leg from each to walk.
It also had two tails, but one was amputated because of the injuries it suffered during the attack.
It is now recovering at the West Rome Animal Clinic, in Rome, Georgia, where vet Dan Pate said: ‘It is really an anomaly. It appears it had an identical twin that didn’t form all the way.
‘Somehow it has a fairly normal gait, although the centre legs seem to get in the way.’
The deer was separated from its mother by two dogs being walked by their owners Melissa and Alan Dunagan.
‘It wasn’t until after we put the dogs back in the house and were about to release the fawn that we realised it had six legs,’ said Mrs Dunagan.
It is likely to be to be taken the deer facility at the University of Georgia once it has recovered.
